Claire Rayner

With the death of Claire Rayner this country has lost one exceptional human being, but the heroic life-force of around 10. She was a very rare thing in the world of pressure groups and advocates, a truly independent mind willing to give anyone a verbal kicking, albeit charmingly, if she felt they were being impractical, inhumane or wrong-headed. That of course was particularly so in health-care, where as a nurse of the old-school she highlighted the dogmatic idiocies built into the NHS by Labour and Tory politicians alike since the 1980s. But she was also a successful novelist, a pioneer agony-aunt, and a leading humanist who just weeks ago voiced her disgust at the visit of Pope Benedict in typically robust fashion. Not someone you could ever ignore.
