Annie Nightingale

Annie Nightingale is still presenting a show on Radio 1 some 40 years on from her first programme, that station’s first female DJ and now its longest serving presenter, eternally excited by new music. That distinctive raspy voice has always made it sound like life could be a party left reluctantly at dawn, a bias towards fun in her music strengthening that impression. In the mid-seventies when many contemporaries seemed unwilling to quit the previous decade she like John Peel embraced punk, rescuing Whistle Test from prog rock obscurantism; and today she remains fired by musical development. A hero of British Broadcasting.
