Karen Woo

She told friends the world cannot afford to lose any more heroes, but surgeon Karen Woo tragically is another heroic victim of the Afghan conflict. Not apparently religious herself she was working for a Christian charity bringing healthcare to the poor in a remote region of the country. It appears her group was killed by robbers, though the Taliban have claimed with their usual subtlety the medics were on a mission against them. The 36-year-old doctor had put a well paid career on hold while she helped the needy thousands of miles from her home. Her tour was about to finish, and she was shortly due to marry a man she met in Kabul. But fate and thuggery intervened; and the world did lose another hero.
