There are few sports more natural than swimming – if we ignore the butterfly stroke. Babies thrown in the water supposedly have a natural diver’s reflex, and the ability to swim, though testing this out could lead to prosecution and worse. And at the other end of the age spectrum swimming remains an activity that the old can still enjoy and benefit from. But for those who want to excel in the sport it goes way beyond pleasant splashing about in the pool. Competitive swimmers notoriously put themselves through rigorous training regimes, and need top quality coaching to perfect their technique.
Diving likewise is something many of us take to quite naturally, throwing ourselves in the pool for fun. Competitive diving, especially the high-board version, seems far from natural, and without good coaching would surely risk physical harm. The beauty of a perfect dive only comes with endless practice.
(Swimming)-hats off then to those who are prepared to be at their local pool at five or six in the morning to enjoy, if such is the applicable word, the facilities to themselves. And respect too to their coaches.
Some seeking coaching have no pretensions to Olympic glory of course and swimming clubs often help those who never learned finally get started. Even if you never intend using the skill, if you find yourself accidentally in the water, swimming, as George Burns said of growing old, is better than the alternative.
