Just about thirty minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh , on Scotland’s sunny East coast you’ll find Fife, otherwise known as the ‘Kingdom of Fife’. With its reputation for having the best kept beaches in Scotland, its collection of delightful fishing villages to explore, and, last but not least, its world-class golfing facilitites, Fife is the perfect relaxing haven away from the stresses and strains of modern day life.
King James VI of Scotland described Fife as a 'beggar's mantle fringed with gold' - the golden fringe being the coast and its chain of little ports with their thriving fishing fleets. And it’s these delightful East Neuk fishing villages (Anstruther , Pitemweem and Crail are the more touristy) with their sweeping beaches and bustling harbours that offer some great little spots for families and couples to get a large helping of rest and relaxation. There’s a wealth of wonderful shoreline walks as well as watersports and sea-angling for the more active, and a good choice of places to visit from ancient castles (Kellie Castle) and museums ( Crail Museum and Heritage Centre ) to country parks (Craigtoun Country Park is great for the kids) and nature trails. Each of these quaint villages has its own surprises up its sleeves, and will draw you in with every step you take on their cobbled streets.
Just 25 minutes from Anstruther, you’ll find the world famous town of St Andrews . Fife boasts many of the best golf courses in Scotland, including the world-famous Old Course at St Andrews, home to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the focal point of world golf. But you don’t have to worry if your own golf abilities aren’t up to world-class standard as there are over 45 different golfing venues to choose from, so there is bound to be somewhere to suit your skills and handicap. If you do manage to get a round in at St Andrews, maybe you can put your clubs down long enough to take a visit to St Andrews Castle where they regularly give mock battle re-enactments and pageants and can take a trip into the ‘bottle dungeon’. Don't forget St Andrew’s Cathedral where you can climb the daunting St Rule's Tower for magnificent views. You’ll probably be able to see West Sands beach which is where Chariots of Fire was filmed from there.
Southern Fife is dominated by Dunfermline , the former capital of Scotland, and the town of Kirkcaldy , Fife's largest settlement. Dunfermline's royal and monastic past dominate the town which clocks up a royal palace, a 12th-century abbey, which is the final resting place of Robert the Bruce as well as being the burial site of eleven other Scottish kings and queens, as well as the restored 15th-century Abbot House, and the cave in which St Margaret bathed the feet of the poor – not bad for starters. It’s also the birthplace of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie . The first of many Carnegie Libraries was built here in 1881 and both Carnegie Hall, where you can take in a show or get some comedy action, and Pittencrieff Park were gifted to the town by the 'Star-spangled Scotchman'. Carnegie's birthplace, a humble weaver's cottage has been preserved and includes a museum of his life.
Kirkcaldy, known as ‘the lang toun’, its name derived from the original expansion of the town in a thin strip parallel to the sea front, has some great things in store for visitors. Kirkcaldy was famous throughout much of the 19th and 20th Centuries for linoleum manufacturing and for its annual week-long Links Market, one of Europe's longest street fairs which took place on the sea front that celebrated its 700th anniversary in 2004. The town still has one of the longest developed sea-fronts in Europe, overlooking the Firth of Forth . If you want to take in some history and heritage, then make sure you put Ravenscraig Castle firmly on your list, and a walk round the Dysart Harbour area will be well worth the effort. Balgonie Castle near Coaltown of Balgonie, Falkland Palace , the hunting place of Scottish kings and the Hill of Tarvit are also must stop spots when you are in the area.
