Mark Cavendish

His personality does not endear him to all – the word arrogant sometimes arises in descriptions of the sprint cyclist and in the recent Tour of Switzerland he angered other competitors enough to spark a protest against him – but the Manx Missile is making a name for himself again in the Tour de France. Already the most successful ever Brit in the race, with six stage wins in the 2009 event, he now has three in the 2010 race and power to add. Douglas-born Cavendish may never win cycling’s greatest contest, but the race-end green jersey as top sprinter must surely be his soon.
