Rory McIlroy
The new Holywood (as opposed to Hollywood) superstar, Rory McIlroy showed incredible skill in winning the US Open, but more than that he showed heroic character. Just weeks after the chastening experience of cracking in the final round of the Masters he again led going into the closing 18 holes at Bethesda, but this time never looked like yielding an inch. In taking the title he set a new low-score record for the championship, hammering that set by Tiger Woods. The two are very different figures, and the smiling, unassuming and floppy-haired young Irishman is going to have enormous appeal to sponsors.
