Amy Williams

Lying on her stomach facing forward, reaching 89mph by the end of the run, Amy Williams from that hitherto unheralded winter sports centre of Bath has grabbed a gold medal in Vancouver and is suddenly a star. Her movements to find the perfect line were barely perceptible to the uneducated majority, for whom skeleton bob previously may only have conjured images of a dieting friend. It’s great that someone who failed to make the grade in her first sport – 400m running – had the drive to give another a go. And her courage and matter-of-fact reaction to the win endeared her to us more than hysterical shirt-throwing by footballers ever could. Skeleton funding is surely over for the new skeleton bob queen.
