Gary Lineker

Gary Lineker was arguably the best British striker of the modern era with an amazing ratio of 48 goals in 80 games for England. His game was based not on strength or lightning pace, but intelligence: always well positioned; knowing that hitting the target is what matters. He hit the target again in resigning his work with The Mail on Sunday over that paper’s ‘exposé’ of Lord Triesman’s private chat with an old colleague that has surely damaged England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup Finals. Lineker has again shown the intellect and integrity that in a 14-year top-class career never once saw him booked or sent off, for which he is our hero this week.
