Melbury Beacon and Melbury Down, Dorset

Melbury Beacon and Melbury Down are in the south western area of England. They can be found in the north west of the county of Dorset. Melbury Beacon rises to 863 feet above sea level, allowing wonderful views to the north of the Saxon town of Shaftesbury and across to the surrounding counties. Melbury Down is a meandering dry valley that cuts across the ridge of Cranborne Chase . The Chase straddles the counties of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire . The chalk grassland of Melbury Down is interrupted by a narrow band of flint scree which, unusually, is home to some acid-loving heathers.
