The City of London - also known as the Square Mile - is the oldest part of the capital. Around 200 AD, the Romans built a defence wall around the settlement. Remnants of this ancient London wall still exist, and its boundaries have not changed a great deal. The area it once enclosed is the City, which has expanded outwards a little and these days marks its borders with black bollards and, at major entrances, statues of dragons. The City has endured many disasters, with the Great Plague of 1665 followed the next year by the Great Fire of London. It was a major bombing target in World War II. Today, however, the City of London is one of the world's most important financial and business centres, housing the London Stock Exchange and the Bank of England, where there's a free interactive museum. The City boasts some spectacular skyscrapers, notably Tower 42, 30 St Mary Axe ("The Gherkin") and Lloyd's Building, a remarkable glass and steel structure that's the Lloyd's insurance group's HQ. Some of the City's finest attractions include St Paul's Cathedral and the nearby Festival Gardens, the Barbican multi-arts centre, Smithfield Meat Market and the Museum of London.
