West Bromwich Albion F.C. is also known as The Baggies, The Albion, The Throstles, West Brom and W.B.A. They were formed in 1878 by workers at the local Spring Works as the West Bromwich Strollers and changed to Albion in 1880. The club turned professional in 1885 and achieved immediate success, appearing in the FA Cup Final for three consecutive years; 1886, 1887 and 1888, winning the trophy at the third attempt. This was to be the first of five FA Cup wins for the club, as of 2007. They were founder members of the Football League in 1888 and have played their home games at the Hawthorn Ground since 1900. The team have an impressive League record with the majority in top flight and only a brief spell below the second tier. They have only won the League Championship on one occasion, in 1919-20, but have finished runners up on two other occasions. Notable players include Jesse Pennington, a defender who made almost 500 appearances between 1903 and 1922, and W.G. Richardson who netted an impressive 228 goals in 354 appearances. Tony Brown played for the club between 1963 and 1981, making a record 720 appearances. Other notable players include Bryan Robson, Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis.
