The little settlement of Grizebeck sits between two very distinct areas of Cumbria. Just to the north (the village sits on the boundary) is the National Park, with its lakes and mountains surely known to all. To the south is the less celebrated but well-worth exploring Furness peninsula with sights like Dalton Castle and Furness Abbey. Grizebeck is one of the out of the way places that Cumbria is rich in, set in pretty countryside with traditional cottage accommodation aplenty available to those wanting to spend some quiet time away from it all, or using it as a base for nearby Windermere and Coniston Water. In the village there is a 300 year old coaching inn serving local brews, with a log fire in winter for those in need of warmth after a day’s sight-seeing. South east of the village is Shooting House Hill, one of the area’s smaller ascents, at just over 1,000 feet, and to the north between Grizebeck and Coniston Water is Woodland Fell, a couple of hundred feet lower still. The River Duddon runs just to the east of the village, its estuary offering some lovely scenes – and there are Salmon and Sea trout in the area too, with some fishing available by arrangement with the local rights owners.
