An extremely wealthy and densely populated district of west London, Kensington also has plenty of affordable attractions and acres of green, open spaces for the visitor. Kensington Palace, a magnificent royal building dating back to the 1600s, was the birthplace of Queen Victoria in 1819, and the last residence of Diana, Princess of Wales, whose life it celebrates with a rolling programme of exhibitions. The adjoining Kensington Gardens, linking directly to Hyde Park, offer delightful walks through 275 acres of beautiful trees and flower beds. Places of particular interest in the Gardens include the Albert Memorial, the Peter Pan statue and the Diana Memorial Playground, dominated by a massive pirate ship that's anchored in its own beach. Further west, Holland Park is quieter with an especially scenic Japanese garden. Kensington is characterised by Victorian and Georgian terraces, small, graceful, garden squares and very few high-rise buildings. But things can get hectic, especially at the weekends, in High Street Kensington, one of the capital's top shopping destinations. This is home to the Roof Gardens, a restaurant and nightclub where flamingos and ducks famously mingle with guests among the trees, blossoms, fountains, streams and ponds on a rooftop high above the traffic.
