Born 1709 . Died 1784 - Writer, critic & lexicographer
Better known as Doctor Johnson, he was a writer, critic and lexicographer. In 1747 he started a Dictionary of the English Language which took him eight years to complete and for this he was awarded an honorary degree at Oxford. During this time he also wrote and edited a bi-weekly periodical The Rambler. Also famed for his monumental Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets (10 vols, 1779-81). He was buried in Westminster Abbey.
