Chart Gunpowder Mills, maintained by voluntary effort, are the oldest of their kind in the world. Explosives manufacture began in Faversham in the 16th century and by 1900 it was the main centre of the UK industry, with huge plants producing gunpowder, TNT and dynamite. Within 35 years all the factories had closed but one gunpowder mill was left - at Chart Mills. In 1967 this was rescued from the jaws of the bulldozer by the Faversham Society and then restored. Picture the massive wheels turning as they made powder for Nelson at Trafalgar and Wellington at Waterloo.

Consciousness is an end in itself. We torture ourselves getting somewhere, and when we get there it is nowhere, for there is nowhere to get to. - D H Lawrence
