You will find 2000 years of fascinating history in this jewel of a Heritage Centre as you follow the timeline from the lives of the earliest settlers, the Saxons, Romans through to modern times. Feel the romance of the Elizabethan rooms with the original chest belonging to adventurer turned benefactor Henry Hatch. Perch on a powder keg and watch the story of the town’s explosives industry unfold, be moved by the tragedy of 1916 that killed more than 100 workers and devastated the townspeople. You will delight in the row of shops and kitchen of yesteryear, the sports equipment - including a penny farthing that is still occasionally ridden today! Children love the Victorian schoolroom, they giggle at the wind-up gramophone and 1950’s TV but are enthralled by the working pre-electronic telephone exchange! The challenge is to make it through the WW1 and 2 areas, listen to the recordings of air raids over Kent and the hair raising wail of the warning siren, without feeling a wave of emotion for the heroes of that time.
Friendly and knowledgeable stewards are on hand to guide you if you wish – free of charge of course - or you can browse at leisure but either way, allow a couple of hours at least for your visit, you will need it! The Visitor Information Centre is also sited within the Centre, together with a specialist Kent bookshop.
In addition there is a combined Museum entrance & guided town walk £5
