Studied law at Glasgow University. Excellent public speaker. Became MP in 1970 representing Lanarkshire North. Served in administration of Harold Wilson and Jim Callaghan. Succeeded Neil Kinnock as Labour Party leader in 1992. Died suddenly of heart attack.
