Died on 8th of June 1809

Born 1737. Died 1809 - English radical political writer.

Son of a Quaker smallholder. Emigrated to America in 1774. Wrote pamphlet, Common Sense (1776) advocating complete independence for the American colonies. Returned to England in 1787, publishing his two-part Rights of Man (1791-2), supporting the French Revolution and the overthrow of the British monarchy. Fled to France where he was imprisoned, began work on his Age of Reason (two parts, 1794-5), an attack on organised religion. On his release he returned to the USA where he died in poverty.
