(Hugh) Christopher Longuet-Higgins was a polymath in a scientific world where specialism tends to be all-important. At Balliol he was an organ scholar and published a brilliant chemistry paper as an undergraduate; he held chairs in theoretical physics and theoretical chemistry; moved into artificial intelligence and then experimental psychology, and published on music cognition. That journey through various disciplines saw him teach or research at, among others, the universities of Manchester, Chicago, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Sussex.
