Lenham has been described as "the perfect village", a place where medieval manor houses, halls and a splendid tithe barn co-exist harmoniously with the red-bricked buildings of subsequent years. The barn sits next to the 14th Century St Mary's Church in an extremely pretty square at the heart of the village, interlinking with other squares to form an unusual pattern of streets. Unsurprisingly, this a favourite location for film-makers. Lenham is an old market centre situated between Maidstone and Ashford. The white chalk cross cut into the North Downs as a war memorial, above the village, can be seen from miles around. In its early days, Lenham did a roaring trade in watercress, and the plant features prominently in the village sign. The central square bears testament to a colourful history. The Lime Tree Hotel, an original timber-framed construction, dates back to the 14th Century. The Saxon Pharmacy is named after the 1946 discovery of three 1,200-year-old bodies during renovations to the building - the 15th Century Hall House. And the Dog & Bear hotel, built as a coaching inn in 1602, welcomed a royal visitor in 1704: Queen Anne's coat of arms is still displayed above the door.
