Carnoustie is situated on the east coast of Scotland looking out to the North Sea. Located between Dundee and Arbroath, Carnoustie is a small residential and holiday resort town in the Scottish region of Angus. The youngest of the seven Angus burghs, Carnoustie, was only founded during the late 18th century, when the Earl of Dalhousie sold the links to the town’s people. Historically interesting facts are found inland to the north in the suburb of Panmure, this ancient estate dates back to the early 11th century, when the Scots defected the Danes near the Lochty Burn at the battle of Barry. The ruins of the stone built Panmure Castle are found here, the castle erected during the 12th century was reputedly demolished by 1336. Carnoustie is well known for golf, and has three challenging golf courses in the area. The Carnoustie Championship course lies to the south of the town; it opened in 1842 and regularly hosts the British Open Championships. Golf and the beautiful golden sandy beach account for the town’s popularity and tourist trade; it has hotels, lodging houses, two railway stations, three golf courses, a variety of shops, pubs and local amenities all in a picturesque setting.
