Southerness is a small coastal village in Dumfries and Galloway on a headland on the Solway coast in south-west Scotland situated 9 miles south of New Abbey. A lighthouse was built in 1748 to direct the ships into the River Nith, the lighthouse, now disused, is the 2nd oldest in Scotland. The village of Southerness was built in the late 18th century by Richard Oswald of Auchencruive. Surrounded by the panoramic scenery of the Galloway Hills, miles of sandy beaches and views across the Solway Firth to the Lake District in England Southerness is a popular holiday destination and an ideal location for touring Dumfries and Galloway, there are shops and amenities, holiday parks, hotels, self-catering accommodation and places to eat. There are two golf courses nearby including the Southerness Championship course and the Solway Links. There are hiking and walking trails in the forest of Dalbeattie and Mabie. Mountain-bikes can be hired at Rik’s Bike shed in Mabie Forest and sea-fishing is available along the coast. Mabie Farm Park has animals, a play barn and grass-sledging, there is Pony-trekking and an RSPB bird sanctuary. Local attractions include the Shambellie House National Museum of Costume, the New Abbey Corn-mill and the John Paul Jones Museum with tributes to the founder of the US Navy.
