West Kilbride is a small picturesque town in North Ayrshire, by the Firth of Clyde on the west-coast of Scotland, adjoined to the north with Seamill and 4 miles northwest of Ardrossan, with a backdrop of Cauldron Hill, Law Hill and Tarbet Hill sweeping down the beautiful coastline overlooking the Isle of Arran West Kilbride is noted for growing its Ayrshire potatoes and is referred to as the ‘tattie toon’. Historically in 1306 Robert the Bruce gave the land of the Barony of Kilbride to the Boyds. Interesting structures in West Kilbride include a Neolithic stone standing on Blackshaw Hill, and traces of a roman fort nearby. There are four castles, Hunterston Castle, Law Castle 15th century restored and now an exclusive holiday-home. Portencross Castle 14th century sits at the harbour and in ruins Crosbie Castle, home of William Wallace’s Uncle Ranald Craufurd in 13th century. The town has an Institute and Public Hall with local history museum, community centre, library, churches, hotels, holiday accommodation and various shops including several craft shops and art studios, based around a local initiative West Kilbride is well-known as the ‘Craft Town of Scotland.’ There are numerous walks including a wooded walkway through Kirktonhall Glen, sporting facilities, a golf course and Quad biking at Blackshaw Farm.
