Lochailort is a village in the Highlands of Scotland sitting at the head of the sea-loch, Loch Ailort. The village is situated between Mallaig and Fort William on the Road to the Isles, there is a side road leading west and south to the tiny village of Glenuig. Lochailort has been used as a location for films including Local Hero, Complicity and Breaking the Waves. The village dates back to c1650 when the Inn was recorded, by 1750 a small settlement had grown. The village lies on the West Highland Line and is served by the Lochailort Railway Station, construction began in 1890 and a small town was built to accommodate the navvies, the line opened in 1901 with seven tunnels and an eight-arched viaduct standing three miles west at Loch nan Uamh. Lochailort is known for salmon farming and is a popular tourist destination with Lochailort Inn and Glenuig Inn, self-catering and B&B accommodation around the area. There is a small white Roman Catholic Church which was consecrated in 1874. Activities in the area include scenic walks such as The West Highland Way and the Great Glen Way, cycle-hire and out-door pursuit centres. Opposite the Loch stands Inverailort house which was used as a Special Training Centre by the War Office in 1940.
