Northiam is an historic village positioned in the valley of the Rother River, in the County of East Sussex, and is home to just over two thousand people. It's an attractive village, complete with a Village Green that's steeped in history. An ancient Oak tree proudly stands where Queen Elizabeth I once sat whilst enjoying a picnic, when she was journeying to Rye in 1573. It is said that she was so pleased that she left behind a pair of green damask slippers which are still treasured by the village today. Clustered around the Green that is still home to an ancient Water Pump that was used right up until 1907, are pretty cottages, white weather boarded houses that date back centuries, and the 12th Century Church dedicated to St Mary's whose melodious sound of six bells can often be heard. Nearby, are the playing fields which played host to no less than four Prime Ministers during the second World War when Churchill inspected the troops who were preparing for the infamous D Day Landings. Visitors can enjoy walks in the pleasing countryside, along the river bank, or there are a handful of shops for that every day purchase, and a good choice of pubs to try.
