Stoke Poges is a village in south-east Buckinghamshire, 3 miles north of Slough where the nearest train station is and 5 miles from Heathrow. This village is easily accessible by road too, just 5 minutes drive from junction 16 on the M25. Hence it has become a fashionable residential area, on the lower slopes of the Chilterns, with 4 pubs and 2 restaurants. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086, there is a famous association between the village and Thomas Gray, the poet. He rests in a simple family tomb in the churchyard of St Giles. The parish church has some fascinating stained-glass windows and architecture from Saxon, Norman, early Gothic and Tudor times. The village is full of history and grand residences. Stoke Court dates back to 1455 with a host of famous owners but now restored and owned by the Bayer Group (a pharmaceutical multinational). The famous Stoke Poges Golf Club manor house was where Queen Elizabeth I entertained in 1601 and King Charles I was imprisoned there in 1647 before execution. There is a 27-hole course, award-winning spa and 5-star accommodation on offer, as well as the feeling you’re on a film set - the course has been featured in many films, including “Goldfinger” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary”. Sefton Park was used as a War Office in the Second World War but bought at auction in 1948 by Glaxo, developing antibiotics there. Stoke Place is a 17th Century Queen Anne mansion situated in 25 acres of beautiful, Capability Brown-styled, parkland and now a country hotel.
