Thaxted is a small market town just 8 miles north-east of Stansted Airport, nestling in a valley which it shares with the River Chelmer. Thaxted has a recorded history which dates back to before the Domesday Book. Thaxted today has a variety of shops, restaurants, pubs and other businesses which serve the needs of resident and visitor alike. There are some interesting buildings which include almshouses, the restored timber framed Guildhall and a windmill. Gustav Holst, the English composer, lived in Town Street, Thaxted for a while and wrote 'The Planets' suite whilst living in the town. Thaxted windmill was built by John Webb, a local farmer and landowner, in 1804 and is a fully restored Grade II* listed windmill, still capable of grinding corn into flour. On the ground and first floors there is a rural museum containing agricultural artefacts. There is a picnic area surrounding the Windmill. The Guildhall is a very impressive building dating from about 1390 and was built for the local Cutlers Guild. It is still in use and has been so for over 600 years. The Parish Council, the Trustees of Yardleys Charity and other bodies hold their meetings there, and it is also used for exhibitions of local crafts and other interests at frequent intervals throughout the year. Thaxted’s St. John the Baptist, Our Lady & St. Lawrence Church is one of the grandest in the county of Essex, and is almost cathedral-like at 183 feet long and 87 feet wide. The Church stands on a hill and dominates the town and the splendid spire can be seen many miles away. The building began in 1340, and its growth continued through the Reformation, until it was completed in 1510. There is an excellent 'walk around' guide in the church available to visitors.
