Doncaster Rugby Football Club was founded in 1875 and spent its first fifty years living a somewhat nomadic existence. They even crossed codes to the Rugby League playing Northern Union for a brief period. In the early 1920's the club began to ground share with the local cricket club, an arrangement which lasted about thirty years. Doncaster then moved to its current home at Armthorpe Road, known as Castle Park. In the late seventies Doncaster introduced mini rugby, which has led to the team having the largest youth membership in Yorkshire and has helped feed the club's 'home grown' policy. In 1987 the team joined the newly formed English League structure in the tenth tier Yorkshire Two Division. By the time the professional era had begun, Doncaster had achieved four promotions, including three back to back, to find themselves in North Two Division. The team was further boosted by a lottery grant, which helped improve training facilities at Castle Park. Doncaster continued its success into the twenty first century and, after a number of further promotions, has found itself in the second tier National Division One. After an initial difficulty adjusting to the higher level, in 2008 Doncaster finds itself challenging for promotion.
