Although there are reports of a Warrington Rugby team playing at least as far back as 1873, the official launch of the team now known as Warrington Wolves Rugby League Football Club was in 1879, when the club was formed as Warrington Zingari. In 1884 the club amalgamated with Warrington Wanderers, who are believed to have been established in 1876. The club has played for most of its history at Wilderspool where it first played in 1880, lthough there was still some moving around before the club finally settled there. The Wolves continued to play at Wilderspool until 2003 when the team moved to the Halliwell Jones Stadium. In 1895 Warrington were among the 22 clubs who broke away to form the Northern Rugby Union, marking the beginning of what we now know as Rugby League. In 1905 Warrington won the Challenge Cup for the first time. The team has won the trophy five times in its history, the last being in 1974. Warrington has also been the League Champions on three occasions, in 1947-48, 1953-54 and again in 1954-55. In 1906-07 Warrington were instrumental in introducing a number of law changes including the switch to 13 a side. These law changes became the basis of the fundamental differences between Rugby League and Rugby Union
