To the north of the Perth to Inverness road, near the village of Blair Atholl, a short detour along a great avenue of lime trees rewards the traveller with the sight of Blair Castle.
The sound of the piper may be heard throughout the grounds of the castle, the ancient seat of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl.
Today Blair Castle is Scotland's most visited privately-owned historic house and a five star visitor attraction.
Thirty fully furnished rooms are open to view and each contains an aspect of the fine collections skillfully and passionately tended, over centuries, by the Murray family.
There is great variety, with Ancestral and Landscape Paintings, Arms and Armour, China, Lace, Embroidery and Tapestry collections.
The Castle hosts many events during the year, from World Piping Championships and Highland Games to Horse Trials and Highland Balls, in and out of season. It is also available for weddings and receptions.
Blair Castle, within Atholl Estates, which covers some 143,000 acres, includes a 70,000 acre deer forest, and is populate with giant larches, Scots firs, beeches and colourful rhododendrons. The natural beauty of picturesque rivers and romantic, forest-clad mountains beyond perfectly complement the grandeur of the Castle's interior. Diana's Grove, Hercules Garden and the ruins of historic St Bride's Kirk are features of the magnificent grounds.
