The town of Paisley, near Glasgow, is the home of the Paisley Pattern. Paisley shawls were woven here from 1805 onwards, although the pattern itself originates from the East. Paisley Museum and Art Galleries has the best collection of Paisley Shawls in the world, a selection of which are always on display. Paisley has the first municipally funded Museum in Scotland, and the 1871 building is a fine example of Victorian architecture.
The Art Galleries at the Museum are host to many fine Scottish paintings and an excellent collection of studio ceramics. There are also changing exhibitions ranging from art and photography, to social history.
The Museum Shop has many exclusive gifts in Paisley pattern, including authentic shawls and scarves produced by Whitehill and Wilsons, the last remaining shawls manufacturer in Paisley still in business.
