PLEASE CHECK BEFORE TRAVELLING. VISITOR REPORTS SUGGES THAT THIS LOCATION MAY BE CLOSED. SECRET BUNKER AT KELVDON THATCH BRENTWOOD IS STILL OPEN.
Visit the former Essex County Nuclear War Headquarters. Built in 1951, the 14,000 sq ft bunker is on two levels, above and below ground. As you explore the once secret rooms and passageways you can see at first hand the Operations Centre, plant rooms, dormitory, offices, communications centres and all the other rooms that would have been the 'Hub' of Essex during a nuclear attack. Sound effects, cinemas and displays interpret the story. We are disabled friendly and we have a gift shop and café along with free parking. Group visits and evening tours can also be booked throughout the year.
