Son of clerk, educated at Christ’s Hospital where formed lasting relationshiop with Coleridege. Took post in India (1792) where he remained for 30 years. Achieved success with joint publication, with sister Mary, of Tales from Shakespeare (1807). Wrote books for children, verse and prose. Best known works were Essays of Elia (1823-33).
