The first purpose-built theatre on Bankside, the Rose is the only Elizabethan theatre site with remains completely available for modern exploration. Its remains are tucked into the basement of an office block, submerged beneath a protective pool of water. This atmospheric site not only provides an insight into Shakespeare and Marlowe's London, it offers the opportunity to 'tread the boards' in their footsteps. The exhibition, which unfolds the fascinating story behind this unique fragment of history, centres around a multi-media presentation, narrated by Sir Ian McKellen, and designed by award-winning theatre designer William Dudley.
