1st of November - All Saints Day
1st of November is the 305th day of the year
All Saints Day:
This feast day commemorates the entirety of the Christian church’s collection of saintly and martyrs, and interestingly was originally (before it reached Britain) celebrated on May 1 rather than November 1 as now. It is also linked with the Pantheon in Rome being changed from a place of pagan worship to a Christian shrine in the 7th century.
A custom of this day that is sadly no longer observed was the making and distribution of soul cakes, given to the poor and to visitors to one’s home. This act of personal charity benefitted both the giver and the souls of the departed, especially any unlucky enough to be stuck in purgatory.
