16th of October - World Food Day

16th of October is the 289th day of the year

World Food Day:
October 16th was chosen as World Food Day because it was on that day in 1945 that the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations was founded. The day is to food and food security worldwide what World Water Day and World Health Day are to their objects, and as with those ‘celebrations’ it employs a theme each year to focus the minds of politicians and others with influence, and to remind the rest of us about the imbalances in the distribution of food worldwide. Recent themes have included The Right to Food and Biodiversity in Food Security. With emergency stocks of food rapidly diminishing in developed nations, demand for resource-draining meat rocketing in the newly enriched BRICK nations, and changing weather patterns diminishing harvests around the globe, it is likely that the topic and the day will receive rather more attention from power-brokers now than they have done since 1945.
