What a pleasant way to spend an hour: in the beer garden of Ye Old Fighting Cocks overlooking the estuary at Arnside and waiting for the rumble of the train over the old causeway. The sun shone, but the Thwaites bitter beat the unlikely heat of a Cumbrian afternoon in May. Chalk up another victory for the League against Cruel Sandwiches too – plenty of variety (we went smoked salmon and cream cheese, steak and onion, and ham with Stilton), heavy on the filling, good chips, good coleslaw, enough to fill us up for the afternoon’s exercise. With drinks it was still under £20, and not a sundried tomato in sight. Excellent.
