Educated at Queen’s University, Belfast. Member of Ulster Constitutional Party. Elected MP for Upper Bann in 1990, became leader of party in 1995. Shared 1998 Nobel Peace Prize with SDLP leader for negotiations with nationalists in Northern Ireland. Worked industriously to keep peace process alive.
