Educated at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Served with the Scots Guards (1975-1981) and worked for GEC (1981-1988). Became MP for Chingford in 1992. Was shadow Social Security Secretary and shadow Defence Secretary before becoming Leader of the Opposition (2001-2003) before losing a vote of confidence to Michael Howard. Appointed Chairman of the Social Justice Policy Group in 2005.
