John Edward Jones (the ‘Lennard’, his wife’s surname, was added when they married) was a mathematician whose academic career saw him become professor of theoretical physics at Bristol, then the first professor of theoretical chemistry in this country at Cambridge. He had a distinguished career where though he published relatively little it was of great quality, and during which he nurtured the talents of at least two future Nobel laureates. He succeeded Lord Lindsay as Principal of what became Keele University, a move in keeping with his views on the need to broaden tertiary education in Britain.
