Born 1726. Died 1790 - English philanthropist and reformer.


Son of an upholsterer. Spent time as prisoner of war in France (1756). Appalled by conditions in English jails and instigated two Acts of Parliament in 1774 to improve cleanliness of jails and introduce salaries for jailers. Died of typhus contracted while visiting military hospital in the Crimea.
