1916 - 1990. Children’s author, short story writer & playwright

Inspired by a meeting with CS Forester, Dahl’s first published work was Shot Down Over Libya, a story about his wartime adventures, and this propelled him into a career as a writer. He is best known for his children’s stories such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach. He was a successful writer of adult fiction too, and his short story collection Tales of the Unexpected was adapted to a successful TV series of the same name. In the 1960’s he wrote screenplays, the most famous being James Bond-You Only Live Twice and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
