Born 1861. Died 1928 - Scottish field marshal.

Educated at Oxford and Sandhurst. Saw active service in Egypt and South Africa. Commanded the British Expeditionary Force during the Battle of the Somme and the 3rd Battle of Ypres. Had frequent disagreements with both his Prime Minister, Lloyd George, and his French counterparts. After the war he devoted the rest of his life to the care of ex-serviceman, organising the British Legion. Awarded an earldom in 1919.
