(full name and title: Terrence Frederick Venables)
Born: January 6, 1943

Terry Venables is one of the best known names in modern English football history. Venables became popularly known as 'El Tel' following his stint as manager of Barcelona. He is something of a controversial figure, having often found himself cast in the role of both hero and villain.

He started his football career playing in the high flying Chelsea team of the early 1960s. The team often came close to major honours but only took the silverware a single time with victory in the League Cup final of 1965 during Venables' stint at the club. Following an incident where he fell foul of manager Tommy Docherty after breaking curfew, Venables was transferred to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. This must have made the 1967 FA Cup final win over Chelsea all the sweeter for both Venables and Spurs.

In 1969 he moved to another London club, Queens Park Rangers, for whom he played 179 games. He finished his playing career at Crystal Palace, where he changed his role to manager after only 14 appearances.

Venables guided Crystal Palace from the Third Division to the top flight that was then the First Division in just a few years as manager. He left them for Queens Park Rangers where he was again successful taking his team from the third tier to the top flight, this time with an FA Cup Final along the way.

He moved on to Barcelona, where he took the team to Spanish title success, a Spanish League Cup and the European Cup final. However, after failing to build on this success, Venables was sacked in 1987 and took the managerial role at Tottenham later that year.
Venables brought mixed success to Tottenham with the main achievement being an FA Cup victory. He was moved into Chief Executive role by Alan Sugar when he took over as Chairman. He eventually fell out with the club over business dealings.

Venables was initially passed over for England manager in favour of Graham Taylor but then replaced him in 1994. He helped to restore some pride to English football at Euro 96, before being released from his duties due to concerns about his business dealings. The only England loss during his reign was the Euro 96 semi final loss to Germany on Penalties.

Since then Venables has had many associations with clubs and even at International level with Australia. He has been dogged by legal problems with his business dealings, however, being suspended from acting as a company director for seven years in 1998.
