Did you know that the most complete Neolithic village in Europe is to be found near Stromness on Orkney? Rather than archaeologists excavating it, a great storm ripped away the earth in 1850 revealing the intact walls. Built into a midden for protection, the settlement arose about 3000BC, and lasted for half a millennium. Rethink your ideas of our prehistoric forebears: it had drainage, and the houses apparently had inside toilets.
