Monday 13th July 2009 ‘Virginia Woolf’ beach and lighthouse for sale
A stretch of beach and a lighthouse that are as historic as they are picturesque will go under the hammer to fund Truro’s Hall for Cornwall theatre. The lighthouse on Godrevy Island and the nearby Upton Towans beach in Gwithian are both thought to have inspired Virginia Woolf’s novel ‘ To the Lighthouse’.
The 76 acres are now for sale by the owner Dennis Arbon but the sale comes with many restrictions to stop development and to ensure continued public access. Mr Arbon spent many years protecting the beach and the island for the people of Cornwall. He gifted the land to the Hall for Cornwall theatre some years ago to ensure it had a means of raising extra funds at any time in the future. It is felt that the time has now come and so now potential buyers have very rare opportunity to own a stretch of Great Britain’s marvellous coastline. Cornwall
Friday 3rd July 2009 Newquay Airport gets funding approval
Newquay Airport will receive £24.3m from the European Commission to redevelop the facility. The grant is in addition to £19m grant previously awarded to the airport by the EU. The grant is for works that are part of a plan to drive passenger numbers at the airport up by 400%.
The money will be used over the next twenty years to construct a new terminal, training centre and business park on the former RAF St Mawgan base. Plans have also been drawn up for a four-star hotel and a conference centre there. Cornwall
