Howden is an ancient Market town set close to the Ouse River, in the eastern reaches of Yorkshire, which is home to over three thousand eight hundred people. This quiet town is full of charm, with narrow lanes and hidden alleyways close to historic Market Place which was a centre of activity during Medieval times. It has a fascinating history of Pilgrims, Miracles, Air Ships, and Horse Fairs, that's easy to uncover, with the magnificent ruins of Howden Minster which was built by the Monks of Durham in the 12th Century whose impressive tower dominates the skyline rising some 135', the remains of an ancient Bishops Palace, together with elegant Georgian, and Victorian houses and buildings which line the roads. Walkers and cyclists will always be tempted to this rural location with its beautiful surrounding countryside, and Howden Marsh which stretches for seventeen acres. There is a superb choice of shops and restaurants in the Market Place and Bridge Gate, together with a choice of cafes, pubs and bars extending a warm welcome, there's a colourful market to browse and, as it is only seventeen miles or so from the historic cathedral city of York it really is perfectly placed.
