Wigtown is a historic town in Dumfries and Galloway on the Solway coast in southern Scotland situated 6 miles south of Newton Stewart. Wigtown was awarded its burgh charter in 1469. Wigtown is well-known as ‘Scotland’s National Book Town’ with annual Literary Festivals and over 30 book related businesses in town. This picturesque town is surrounded by the scenic Galloway Hills and views over Wigtown Bay, over Creetown to the Lake District in England, it is a popular tourist destination with shops, holiday accommodation, places to eat, a park and bowling green. Historically interesting features include the Martyrs Stake, a memorial of the two woman covenanters drowned in May1685, the Mercat crosses dating 1783, the County Buildings and Town Hall built in 1863; a walking trail is marked though the town touring the historic buildings. Bird-watching is popular with wild-geese and swans over the Bay and colonies of cormorant and gulls on the Murray Isles. Kilsture Forest has walks with way-marked trails suitable for walking, cycling and horse-riding. The Off-road Driving Centre offers 4x4 driving on challenging terrain. Wigtown and Bladnoch 9-hole golf course is set in parkland with views across the Solway Firth and the Bladnoch Whiskey Distillery established in 1817 is Scotland’s most southern distillery; it has a visitor centre, tours and a gift shop.
