Cullen is a historic coastal village in Moray in Scotland situated on a hillside overlooking the old Sea-town in Cullen Bay on the Moray Firth, 25 miles east of Elgin. The original settlement was established by 1189, a chaplaincy was endowed in 1327 by Robert I and Cullen was granted a royal burgh charter in 1455. The village was later moved to higher ground to incorporate park-land and in 1811 the current village of Cullen was planned and built as a regular grid-plan with central-square. A well-known fishing village, Cullen became internationally famous for its Scottish delicacy ‘Cullen Skink’ a delicious smoked haddock, potato and onion soup. Cullen is a popular seaside resort village with a beautiful golden sand beach, it has a hotel, an inn, pubs, camping and caravanning parks, self-catering accommodation, shops, coffee shops and an ice-cream shop regarded as one of the best in Scotland. The old Sea-town has a picturesque harbour designed in 1736 and decorated with traditional fishermen’s cottages and there are scenic coastal walks around. Cullen also has an 18-hole golf club built in1870. Historically interesting features include the ruins of Findlater Castle which lie two miles east on a cliff-top overlooking the North Sea, the stone built Victorian viaduct and Cullen House, an L-plan castle built in the 16th century now converted into now luxury flats.
